Preas: From Pixador to Street Artist
“Preas” is a Rio graffiti writer who spans the gulf between tagging, known in Brazil as pixacão, and traditional beautifying street pieces. This is a recent sample of his work in the Catête neighbourhood. His tag can be seen on the top left of the wall above the painting. Pixadores are immensely unpopular in Rio because of the mess they make. The literal translation of the word means ‘scrawl’. At the same time they are the essence of the graffiti community and pixadores who achieve all city status are folk heroes to many young cariocas.
